"No try"

Today I noticed another odd phenomenon that occurs seasonally in Italy. When stores hold their twice a year sales, you suddenly see signs popping up that read: "No try".

What they mean is you're not allowed to try on the clothes that are on sale. Is it just me, or is that the most ineffective way to get rid of merchandise? I really don't understand, all year long you're allowed to try things on and then suddenly when those same items cost 30% less, trying them on is no longer an option. Why? No really, why?

I personally don't buy ANYTHING unless I can try it on (or return it once I take it home and realize it doesn't fit… but returning clothing in Italy is an entirely different horror story that I'll touch on one day), so it's safe to say that stores with "No try" signs don't get a cent from me.

Yeah, I'd have to agree about the 'no-try' stores. that's kind of ridiculous.

No try? That's weird. I'm with you...no try, no buy!

I'm with you and the previous commenter 'No try? no buy.'

I went sales shopping a few days ago and this happenned to me in two shops. In the first one there was a big sign up saying 'no trying on tops during the sales'. I was able to try on a dress but when it came to a top the sales woman said 'no try!'. In another shop (completely empty - I wonder why) there was a sign saying that you couldn't try on anything during the sales.

The mind boggles - since you can't return stuff in Italy how are you supposed to buy clothes without trying it on? I especially need to try on tops here as I have a large bust and it's hard to find tops which fit properly here. Crazy!

"next opening" is another favorite translation of mine. Re: "no try", ovviesse and H&M don't have the most exciting stuff but at least they offer no-questions-asked refunds, or at least they claim they do.

Anon- "Next Opening" always cracks me up! The joy of bad translations...
For the record: the "return" policy posted in H&M stores is very vague and misleading. I recently tried to RETURN something only to discover that they allow exchanges but no refunds, at all :(
