The great cheddar hunt

Yeah, I like cheddar. You got a problem with that? Since I got back from US, I've been jonesing for cheddar. Don't get me wrong, there are loads of Italian cheeses I adore but sometimes I want me some cheddar. And so began the great cheddar hunt. This weekend I spied a few neighborhood eateries that used cheddar in their dishes, after inquiring they reluctantly yet kindly offered to sell me a chunk of their orange goodness but I still wanted to find a place where I could buy my own whenever I felt the urge.
At the suggestion of a friend, I checked out the deli of all delis- FRANCHI (they do catering too, their website focuses mainly on that). I'd been there a million times but never thought to look for cheddar--- and guess what? They actually had it: sage flavored cheddar (it's green, kind of creeps me out), whiskey cheddar, and good ol' regular orange cheddar all imported from the UK. Joy! Happiness! Cheesy smile! I have found my cheddar dealer!

2016 update: just discovered another shop that sells both British and American cheddar!

hilarious. i go weekly to franchi to buy cheddar... have for years. great as it's right next to castroni so i can also load up on all the gross processed tex mex and betty crocker cookies. feel sick just typing about it, but yum. so bad it's good.

You knew about the cheddar!?!? I can't believe I never saw it there, actually I never really looked for it till now. That section of Cola di Rienzo is like the golden triangle for ex-pats: Franchi, Castroni, and that overpriced but amazingly well-stocked international profumeria!

ha! i didn't know about the profumeria... just the one at piazza san lorenzo in lucina, which apparently just closed it's doors so another prada could open... just what we all needed!

Brava bravissima!!! Cheddar's the BEST... Anyone know where to get it in Milan? I never really looked as I tend to stock up when I'm in the UK, but it would be nice to know...

Sage flavored green cheddar? That would freak me out too.

Cheddar?! I must stop by Franchi. I've been to Castroni. I'm jonesing for a cheddar/tomato grilled cheese sandwich.

I wish I didn't hear about the international profumeria. If they sell Kiehls I'm in big trouble.

Yummmm, cheddar & tomato grilled cheese sandwich! That's what I'll be having for lunch tomorrow. Thanks!

Don't hate me NYC/Caribbean... I had to share the wealth!

The profumeria in Prati doesn't have Kiehl’s but this profumeria near the Pantheon does!

I spied the cheddar through the window last week just before I headed out of town for the weekend... and ran back there first thing this morning to buy a half-kilo of the cheddar classico. Between that, the taco bell hot sauce my friend brought me last week, and the refried black beans I bought at Castroni next door - I can't wait for dinner burritos tonight! Woo hoo!

Tragic update... :(

I went into Franchi today (Dec 2012) and there is no Cheddar. The counter said it was something to do with import problems. Ugh.

The hunt continues...

ojak- OH NO!! I also once bought white cheddar at an Auchan (the one at Porta di Roma). Good luck on your cheddar hunt.
