hugs vs. kisses

I don't know about you all, but I still prefer a good ol' American hug to the Italian-style cheek kissing.

So do I. But even more than that, I miss being able to just say hello or goodbye and not having to add any sort of physical gesture!

Me too! Forgetting where I was, I have had quite a few awkward moments trying to do the American hug while the other person was pulling away for the second kiss...embarrassing. They probably think I'm a freakshow.

Good point KC! Another thing I have a hard time digesting is when people I've JUST met feel they have the right to do the cheek kiss with me. Very uncomfortable and I've yet to figure out a polite way to dodge it.

Jessica- Hahah! I know that feeling all too well, I've been the "freakshow" on many an occasion here in Italy!

Hmmm depends on the person for me, but actually I avoid most of the kissing business. If you don't lean in or get too close (I'm constantly taking steps back from people!), they can't catch ya...maybe not overly polite, but oh well....

We call it "beso-beso".

I don't really care either way about the kiss greeting versus the hug, but after living in Italy for 4 years I became used to the hug. I remember many an awkward moments when I came back to the US and automatically went for the kiss greeting when the other parties were not expecting it. Now after a few years I am a hugger again.
